Dining Out

You just never know where we are going to pop up in Winston-Salem followed by a weekly review

By Jeffrey Willey Publisher Macaroni KID Winston-Salem, NC April 4, 2022

We used to eat out all the time pre-pandemic and now that the mandates are becoming less strict we have decided to make it a routine again.  I know, ok Jeffrey so you are going to go out to eat in Winston Salem again.  What is the big deal?  This time there will be a little spin on dining out for us and of possible interest to you.  REVIEWS!  Each week we will pick a place to dine in Winston Salem and its surrounding areas.  Each Thursday, when you open your newsletter there will be a new review of our experience, our meal, the atmosphere, etc.

Bringing to you now, the first of many reviews in the series called "Dining Out".

Our first visit was to River Birch Lodge.  It took some arm twisting from Debbie to get me to travel outside of my 1-mile comfort zone radius but I eventually gave in.  This was my first visit ever to the River Birch Lodge so I didn't know what to expect.  The restaurant was casually busy upon arrival but we were seated immediately.  We started with a lovely waitress who brought our beverages and explained the daily specials.  Soon after, a gentleman approached us saying he would be taking care of us.  Yes, the confused me but I rolled with it.

We ordered the Brussel Sprouts to share and let me tell you they were AMAZING!

I got a little ahead of myself with the Shrimp Bisque.  While I am certain it is great for someone, I was not that someone.  The next dish to hit the table was the Gourmet Grilled Cheese.  I originally had ordered the sandwich with their Macaroni and Cheese (go figure) instead it arrived with truffle fries.  Not what I ordered, but not upset because the servers were right on top of it.  It was a win for a new customer like me, not only did I get to eat their delicious mac n cheese but I also got to taste the fries.  Either way, I was happy.

As Debbie and I sat at the table filled with all of the best we could want, we looked at each other both said let's do it.  Yes, dessert!  We ordered the Peach Cobbler as suggested by our servers and they were right on the money.  This was possibly the best Peach Cobbler that I have ever had.  The freshness, the quality, and the best part... THOSE CRUMBLES.

Stepping out of my 1-mile radius had paid off.  If you have not eaten at the River Birch Lodge I encourage you to do so.  If you have eaten there, when are you going back?  Job well done to the entire staff at the River Birch Lodge.
