Highlighting non-profits in Winston-Salem, one Organization at a time

Who is your go to when donating Winston-Salem?

By Jeffrey Willey Publisher Macaroni KID Winston-Salem, NC November 3, 2022

Are you someone who is looking to make a change in the world?  Do you see good deeds being done and want to do your part?  Maybe you have a personal attachment to a certain organization.  Whatever the case may be, non-profit companies depend on the support of outside public funding.  It is downright imperative to their survival.  As you plan your day, please take the time to make a plan to help.

There are so many ways that we can help in our community. Some non-profits are looking for supplies, while some simply need volunteers. Of course, there is the traditional financial donation that allows organizations to stay afloat. Not to mention, some of you are looking for tax breaks. Donating to a non-profit allows you to write that donation off.

Many non-profit organizations in and around the Winston-Salem area are looking for help from people in our community.  People like you!  At Macaroni KID Winston-Salem, we will be highlighting a different non-profit organization weekly nominated by our readers. If you have a non-profit organization you would like to nominate, please email us at mackidwinstonsalem@macaronikid.com.  All nominations must be made by a current subscriber of Macaroni KID Winston-Salem. This week, we recognize:

The Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston-Salem

The Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston-Salem is an interfaith ministry that promotes and supports successful aging by providing direct services, volunteer opportunities, and enrichment programs for older adults.

The Shepherd’s Center was founded in 1985 and is an affiliate member of The Shepherd’s Centers of America, which is comprised of approximately 75 affiliates nationwide. We celebrated our 37th anniversary this year, and have over 3,000 members and over 400 dedicated volunteers who provide in excess of 40,000 volunteer hours yearly. More than 5,500 older adults are served annually through the center’s programs and services.

Faith In Action Care Program offers visitation and caregiver respite, transportation to medical appointments and grocery shopping, as well as minor home repairs for older adults and their families. These services allow older adults to remain independent in their own homes for as long as possible. Over 2,000 individuals and families receive services through the program each year.

The program also coordinates the Coalition of Ministries with Older Adults, the Powerful Tools for Caregivers training for family caregivers, and the Saturday Night Fellowship program in collaboration with congregations in the community.

The Vital Living Senior Center Program provides life-long learning opportunities, health promotion and fitness activities, bridge, creative arts, book and discussion groups, day trips, SHIIP/Medicare Counseling, and fellowship opportunities.

The Shepherd's Center is certified as a Senior Center of Excellence through the North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services and is a model "senior center without walls." The program serves over 3,000 older adults and has an attendance of over 30,000 participants each year.

The Congregational Nurse and Health Ministry Program operated as a program of the agency from 2009 to July 2017. As of July 1, 2017, the program transferred to Novant Health.

The program continues to foster community partnerships to promote, develop, and support health ministries in and through faith communities. Based upon a volunteer model, nurses and lay persons from the participating congregations are volunteers within their own faith community.

Continuing education and networking are provided through the program to support the participating congregations. Since 2009, 60 congregations and over 200 nurses have participated in the network reaching over 90,000 individuals with wellness support and services
