Please Don't Hurt Our Future!

By Jeffrey Willey Publisher Macaroni KID Winston-Salem, NC April 6, 2023

Thank you for allowing me to write about the things that I know are important to most of us. I normally try to keep topics light, however, there is nothing light about child abuse. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, which is all the more reason to speak out. I personally come from an abusive upbringing where being hit was as normal as getting a glass of water.  I also grew up not really knowing what "I love you" meant because those three words were rarely spoken in our home. I tell you this not for sympathy, but to give a small glimpse of my first-hand experience and to support what I am about to share.

Child abuse is a serious problem affecting millions of children worldwide. It can take many forms, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect. National Child Abuse Prevention Month is an important time to raise awareness about this issue and take action to prevent it. Here are some ways that you can help bring attention to child abuse and make a difference in the lives of children.

  1. Learn the signs of child abuse - One of the most important things you can do to prevent child abuse is to learn how to recognize the signs of abuse. This includes physical signs, such as bruises or burns, as well as behavioral signs, such as changes in a child's mood or behavior.      By knowing what to look for, you can help identify children who may be at risk and get them the help they need.
  1. Talk about it - Child abuse is a difficult topic to discuss, but it's important to have open and honest conversations about it. Talk to your friends, family, and colleagues about child abuse and the importance of preventing it. Share information about local organizations that work to prevent child abuse and provide support to children who have been abused.
  1. Volunteer your time - There are many organizations that work to prevent child abuse and provide support to children who have been abused. Consider volunteering your time with one of these organizations. You could help with fundraising efforts, participate in awareness campaigns, or work directly with children who have been abused.
  1. Donate to organizations that support child abuse prevention - If you're not able to volunteer your time, consider donating to organizations that work to prevent child abuse and provide support to children who have been abused. Places such as Children's Hope Alliance and Eliza's Helping Hands would greatly appreciate the needed help. Even a small donation can make a difference in the lives of children who have been affected by abuse.
  1. Advocate for policy change - Advocating for policy change is another important way to help prevent child abuse. This might include advocating for stronger laws to protect children from abuse or working to improve the way that child abuse cases are handled by the legal system.

In conclusion, National Child Abuse Prevention Month is an important time to raise awareness about child abuse and take action to prevent it. By learning the signs of abuse, talking about it, volunteering your time, donating to organizations that support child abuse prevention, and advocating for policy change, you can help make a difference in the lives of children. Remember, even small actions can have a big impact. Together, we can be mighty!
