As we end another school year, there are tears of joy, sadness, and relief. Which one does your family fall into? I wanted to take a moment and recognize Old Richmond Elementary School in Tobaccoville, NC. There is a rock out in front of Old Richmond Elementary School that has become a rite of passage, as the 5th-grade class makes its way onto middle school, thus becoming alumni and passing the torch.
I was looking through Facebook when I noticed my friend Angela had posted a few photos of one of her daughters, saying, "Julianna put her handprint on the rock today." I had to know what Angela was speaking of; over the years we have become close friends, and her daughters are the Cookie Queens of Girl Scouts. I love Girl Scout cookies. See the connection? Angela had explained that Julianna was in 5th grade and that the handprint on the rock was like coming of age. As a tradition at Old Richmond Elementary School, Angela's oldest daughter, Mariska, had done the same, as would her youngest. Angela said, "It's sad," through the excitement of explaining this wonderful tradition to me.
So, I wanted to drop a few lines giving recognition to Old Richmond Elementary School and a tradition that I hope sticks for many years. A huge CONGRATULATIONS to Julianna on her growth and her success in middle school next year, and to all the 5th-grade WildCats that will be moving on.
