By Jeffrey Willey Macaroni KID Winston-Salem Publisher August 24, 2023

Congratulations!  You have made it through our trilogy of home ownership, and home selling, and we finish with moving day! When moving to a new home, it's important to stay organized and plan ahead to ensure a smooth and efficient process. Here are 15 tips to help you during your move:

  1. Create a moving checklist: Make a detailed list of all the tasks you need to complete before, during, and after the move. This will help you stay organized and ensure you don't forget anything important.
  2. Set a budget: Determine how much you can afford to spend on your move and allocate funds for packing supplies, moving services, and any other expenses that may arise.
  3. Declutter before you pack: Take the opportunity to go through your belongings and get rid of items you no longer need or want. Donate, sell, or discard anything that is no longer useful to lighten your load.
  4. Gather packing supplies: Stock up on boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and other necessary supplies. You can purchase these items or check with local businesses for free or discounted boxes.
  5. Label your boxes: Clearly label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to. This will make unpacking much easier and help movers or friends know where to place them.
  6. Pack an essentials box: Pack a box with essential items like toiletries, a change of clothes, important documents, and any other items you may need immediately upon arrival at your new home. Keep this box separate and easily accessible.
  7. Notify important parties: Inform your utility companies, banks, insurance providers, and any other relevant institutions about your move. Set up mail forwarding with the postal service to ensure you receive your mail at the new address.
  8. Hire professional movers or enlist help: Decide whether you want to hire professional movers or ask friends and family for assistance. If hiring professionals, research and book a reputable moving company well in advance.
  9. Take inventory: Create a detailed inventory of your belongings, especially if you're using a moving company. This will help you keep track of your items and make any necessary insurance claims in case of damage or loss.
  10. Pack room by room: Pack one room at a time to stay organized and minimize confusion during unpacking. Start with rooms you use less frequently and leave essentials for last.
  11. Protect fragile items: Wrap delicate items in bubble wrap or packing paper and label the boxes as fragile. Use towels, blankets, or clothing to cushion breakable objects.
  12. Take pictures of electronics: Before disconnecting any electronics, take photos of the cords and connections to make reassembling easier at your new place.
  13. Change your address: Update your address with the relevant authorities, such as the post office, your employer, banks, and subscriptions. Don't forget to update your address on important documents and IDs.
  14. Pack an overnight bag: Prepare a bag with essentials for the first night in your new home, including bedding, toiletries, and a change of clothes. This way, you won't have to search through boxes when you arrive.
  15. Clean and prepare your new home: If possible, clean your new home before moving in. Arrange for any necessary repairs or renovations beforehand, so you can settle in more comfortably.

Remember, everyone's moving situation is unique, so adjust these tips to fit your specific needs.  Take a moment—or several moments if needed to take a breather.  Stay hydrated and enjoy your new home.  Good luck with your move!
