One of my students excitedly exclaimed, “Mr. Jeff, did you know Black History Month is coming up?”
I smiled and nodded. “Yes, I do! Do you understand why it’s important?”
She hesitated, her face showing curiosity mixed with uncertainty. Clearly, this was something she had heard about but hadn’t fully grasped. So, I decided to break it down in a way she could relate to.
“Alright, kiddo, think of it this way,” I began. “Black History Month is like a giant celebration—a time when we honor and learn about incredible Black individuals who have shaped history.”
“You know how we celebrate birthdays to recognize someone special? Well, this is like a month-long celebration for all the Black heroes—scientists, artists, leaders, and everyday people—who have done extraordinary things.”
“Think about superheroes—the ones who stand up for what’s right and improve the world. Black History Month helps us learn about real-life heroes who fought for justice, equality, and change.”
“And just like we learn about different colors, shapes, and stories, this month teaches us about different people, their struggles, and their triumphs. It reminds us that everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect, no matter their background.”
As I spoke, I could see the wheels turning in her mind, her excitement shifting into understanding.
Black History Month isn’t just about remembering the past—it’s about recognizing the contributions of Black individuals and ensuring their stories are heard. It’s about embracing diversity, learning from one another, and moving forward with love and unity.
Lead with love. Lead with kindness. And most importantly, lead, young person!
