Juneteenth! Explained in the simplest of terms.

By Jeffrey Willey Macaroni KID Winston-Salem Publisher June 6, 2024

Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day on June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed the last enslaved African Americans that they were free. This was over two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation declared all slaves free in Confederate states.

Juneteenth, a blend of "June" and "nineteenth," is a day to celebrate freedom and African American culture, and reflect on the history and ongoing struggles for equality and justice. Celebrations often include gatherings, food, music, and educational events. It's a day to honor the resilience and contributions of African Americans and to recognize the importance of freedom and civil rights.
