Keeping Kids Safe on the Way to School

Riding the school bus is a fun and convenient way for many kids to get to school. But it's important for everyone—kids, parents, and drivers—to follow safety rules to make sure the trip is safe and smooth. Here are some important tips to remember when it comes to school bus safety.

1. Getting Ready for the Bus

  • Be on Time: Make sure you’re at the bus stop a few minutes early. This helps you avoid rushing, which can be dangerous.
  • Wear Bright Clothes: Wearing bright or reflective clothes makes it easier for the bus driver and other drivers to see you.
  • Wait Safely: Stand back from the curb or the edge of the road while waiting for the bus. Stay at least three giant steps away from the road.

2. Getting On and Off the Bus

  • Wait for the Bus to Stop: Never approach the bus until it has completely stopped, and the driver signals that it’s okay to board.
  • Use Handrails: Hold onto the handrails when getting on and off the bus to avoid tripping.
  • Be Careful Around the Bus: If you need to cross in front of the bus, walk at least 10 feet (or 5 giant steps) in front of it so the driver can see you. Never walk behind the bus.

3. On the Bus

  • Find a Seat and Sit Down: As soon as you get on the bus, find a seat and sit down facing forward. Stay seated throughout the ride.
  • Keep the Aisles Clear: Keep your backpack and other items out of the aisle to avoid tripping hazards.
  • Follow the Driver’s Instructions: The bus driver’s job is to keep everyone safe, so listen carefully and follow any rules they give.

4. Staying Safe Around the Bus

  • Stay Alert: Avoid horseplay or being distracted when near the bus or at the bus stop.
  • Watch for Cars: Even if the bus has flashing lights, always check both ways before crossing the street. Some drivers might not stop, even though they should.
  • Don't Chase After the Bus: If you miss the bus, don't try to run after it. It's safer to wait for the next one or find another way to school.

5. Talking to Your Child About Safety

  • Practice Safe Behaviors: Role-play with your child to practice crossing the street safely and following the bus driver’s signals.
  • Remind Them of the Rules: Regularly remind your child about these safety tips and why they’re important. Make sure they know the bus driver is their safety partner.

6. For Drivers: Be Bus Aware!

  • Stop for School Buses: When a school bus has its stop sign extended or red lights flashing, it means kids are getting on or off. Stop your car and wait until the bus starts moving again.
  • Slow Down: In school zones and neighborhoods, be extra careful and slow down. Kids can be unpredictable.

By following these simple safety tips, we can all help make sure that the ride to and from school is safe and fun for everyone. Let’s work together to keep our kids safe!
