Winston-Salem’s Positive Path Program

Paving the Way for Youth Success

The Positive Path Program is a five-month career development initiative launched by the City of Winston-Salem to support at-risk youth and young adults aged 16 to 24. This program aims to provide "apprentices" participants with valuable skills and experiences to enhance their employability and personal growth. 

Program Overview:

  • Career Exploration: Apprentices receive exposure to careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), engaging in hands-on training and mentorship opportunities.
  • Education and Certifications: Participants have the opportunity to earn their General Educational Development (GED) diploma and obtain professional certifications during the program.
  • Compensation: Apprentices are compensated at the city's minimum wage for 20 hours of work per week, providing them with practical work experience and financial support.

Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for the Positive Path Program, applicants must:

  • Be residents of Winston-Salem.
  • Be between 16 and 24 years old.
  • Meet at least one of the following conditions:
    • Current or former foster youth.
    • Youth or adult offender.
    • Child of an incarcerated parent or caregiver.
    • Low-income youth.
    • 16 or 17-year-old high school dropout (minimum of six months since the last day of high school attendance).

Additionally, applicants must pass a city-sponsored drug test and background check, register for Selective Service (for males), and be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
